So NOW the ATF says it’s ok to shoulder a stabilizing brace, but not ALL braces.
Most of us in the gun industry can agree that the ATF has never been accused of being the brightest or most effective government agency around, but we tolerate them. We can all remember back when they made the completely stupid comment that shouldering a Sig or stabilizing arm brace somehow “redesigned” it magically taking it from a “pistol” to a “short barrel rifle”. Well, they’ve corrected their idiocy.
However, we must all keep in mind that this clarification letter is specific to the SB Tactical brace and not across the board for all similar braces. The ATF specifies that is the user permanently affixes the brace to the buffer tube of your pistol and if you remove the support strap on the brace, you have THEN “redesigned” it. Be careful folks! I see a lot of people out there saying “go shoulder your stabilizing brace!” That is not the case. Other rulings on other braces are most likely forthcoming, but they aren’t all cleared to be shouldered yet. Here’s a copy of the ATF’s wording on that:
