Abraham Lincoln once said “Don’t believe everything you read on the internet.” I’m somewhat inclined to agree with the old dude when it comes to 5.7x28mm ammo. There are “experts” on the internet who will tell you that only FNH-made ammo will function properly in the FNH Five-seveN handgun and that other similarly-made ammo won’t feed properly. (Another claim is that non-FNH rounds are slower. While we don’t test that here, we will “chrono” the rounds soon.)
Briefly about the unique round, FN’s 5.7×28mm ammunition types were briefly manufactured by Olin-Winchester, but today they are mostly made by FN Herstal in Belgium and (since 2006) Fiocchi in the United States. It’s reported that the American Eagle ammo we use in this video is also loaded by Fiocchi, but we have not confirmed that.
As you can see in the video, there is absolutely no feeding or functional issues with the American Eagle ammo at all. The one difference may well be the velocity of this AE round versus the FNH-made round, but there were clearly no functional issues. Stay tuned for our full FN Five-seveN review where we’ll also chrono the FNH brand and American Eagle brand ammo side-by-side.
So go out and buy some of this more accessible ammo. Even honest Abe would agree with us!
